Size Selection Guidance

Constructed with +4 cm (+1.6") of gentle ease over the full bust for a classic semi-fitted look. If you prefer a tight fit, choose one size smaller than your body measurement. Test your knit fabric stretch on our 10cm ruler guide before cutting.

Wearing Ease Explanation

+4 cm (+1.6") ease at bust for comfortable knit wear without clinging.

Fabric & Materials

Recommended substrates, stretch allowances, yardage requirements, and required notions.

Recommended Fabrics

Knit fabrics with minimum 20% 2-way or 4-way stretch and good recovery

  • Cotton jersey with 5% elastane/spandex (180–210 gsm) for best shape retention
  • Bamboo viscose or modal jersey for silky touch and supple drape
  • 100% Ring-spun cotton jersey (with stretch allowance checked)
  • 1x1 rib knit fabric for the neckband strip
Stretch Requirement: Minimum 20% horizontal stretch with minimum 80% recovery

Notions & Sewing Tools

Ensure you have these ready before starting.

Notions:
  • All-purpose polyester thread (or woolly nylon for serger loopers)
  • Clear elastic or twill tape (0.3 m) for stabilizing shoulder seams
  • Twin stretch needle (4.0 mm width) or stretch ballpoint needle (size 75/11 or 80/12)
Tools Required:
  • Sewing machine with stretch/zigzag stitch OR 4-thread serger/overlocker
  • Ballpoint or stretch machine needle (size 75/11 or 80/12)
  • Twin stretch needle for hems (optional)
  • Iron and press cloth

Fabric Yardage Requirements

Size Bracket 115 cm (45") Width 150 cm (60") Width
XS – M 1.4 m (1.5 yd) 1.1 m (1.2 yd)
L – XL 1.7 m (1.9 yd) 1.3 m (1.4 yd)
2XL – 3XL 2 m (2.2 yd) 1.5 m (1.65 yd)

Seam Allowances & Cutting Layout

Exact seam allowances included in pattern lines, piece list, and cutting discipline.

Standard Seams

1.0 cm (3/8") for all stretch seams.

Hem Allowance

2.5 cm (1") for lower hem and sleeve hems.

Neck & Armhole

6 mm (1/4") for neckband seam allowance.

Pattern Pieces to Cut

Piece Name Quantity & Orientation Grainline / Cutting Notes
Front Bodice Cut 1 on fold Direction of maximum stretch must run crosswise
Back Bodice Cut 1 on fold Direction of maximum stretch must run crosswise
Short Sleeve Cut 2 (1 pair) Transfer front armscye balance notch
Neckband Strip Cut 1 Cut with stretch running lengthwise along strip

Fabric Cutting Checklist:

  • Do not allow knit fabric to hang over the table edge when cutting, as weight will distort the grain.
  • Use rotary cutter and weights rather than pins to prevent dragging knit fibers.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

Draft construction notes. Readable online; review against the pattern pieces before sewing.

1

Stabilize and Sew Shoulders

Place clear elastic or twill tape along back shoulder seam inside seam allowance. With right sides together, stitch shoulders using a narrow zigzag (0.5 mm width, 2.5 mm length) or serger at 1.0 cm (3/8"). Press toward back.

Technique Tip: Clear elastic keeps shoulder seams from stretching out over repeated washings.
2

Prepare and Attach Neckband

Fold neckband strip right sides together matching short ends; stitch at 6 mm to form loop. Press loop wrong sides together lengthwise. Mark quarters on neckband and neckline. Pin matching marks. Stitch neckband to neckline stretching ONLY the band, not the garment neckline. Press seam allowance down and steam thoroughly.

Technique Tip: A good steam iron with burst of steam causes the knit neckband fibers to snap into a flat contour.
3

Insert Sleeves Flat

With bodice open flat right side up, align sleeve cap to armscye right sides together. Match center notch to shoulder seam. Stitch at 1.0 cm (3/8") and press toward sleeve.

Technique Tip: Setting knit sleeves flat is faster and yields smoother results than set-in rounds.
4

Stitch Side Seams and Sleeves

Pin from sleeve hem down through underarm to body hem. Stitch in one continuous seam at 1.0 cm (3/8"). Press toward back.

Technique Tip: Ensure underarm seam junctions align before stitching.
5

Hem with Twin Needle or Stretch Stitch

Press sleeve hems up 2.5 cm and lower body hem up 2.5 cm. Pin or use fusible wash-away tape. From the right side, topstitch using a twin needle (4.0 mm) or a subtle zigzag stitch. Give final press.

Technique Tip: Using woolly nylon in the bobbin prevents popped stitches when stretching over the hips.

Troubleshooting & Fit Alterations

Solutions for common fitting hurdles and construction errors specific to this garment.

Problem: Neckband ripples and sticks out like a funnel

Possible Cause: Neckband was cut too long for the fabric's stretch ratio or was not stretched enough during sewing.

Recommended Fix: Unpick band, shorten by 2–3 cm (standard ratio is 80–85% of neckline perimeter for ribbing), and reinstall with even quarter-stretching.

Problem: Wavy rippling along twin needle hem line

Possible Cause: Knit fabric was stretched as it was fed under presser foot.

Recommended Fix: Loosen presser foot pressure, use wash-away hem tape to stabilize the edge, and press heavily with steam.
